Northwest Bearded Dragon (Pogona mitchelli)

Dampier Peninsula, Western Australia

The sun is high in the sky providing the warmth this brightly coloured Northwest Bearded Dragon needs to begin the day’s activities. He can sit like this for hours, perched on a branch or wooden fence post, soaking up the heat from the sun. If his body temperature rises too much he is able to change the colour of his scales to a lighter shade to reflect the heat, or darken them to absorb more. These changes can be made for camouflage as well, or during social or territorial displays.
