Perentie (Varanus giganteus)
Gnarloo Station, Western Australia
The Perentie is Australia’s largest lizard and the fourth-largest living lizard on earth. Reaching 2.5m this impressive reptile is the king of its domain. It inhabits dry regions and is usually associated with rocky ranges and outcrops where it shelters in caves, deep crevices and burrows. If threatened, this powerful carnivore will stand its ground and use its arsenal of claws, teeth, and whip-like tail to defend itself. They inflate their throats and hiss as a defensive display, and strike at opponents with their muscular tails.
