One of the highlights of my reptile photography journey was having my expedition in search of the elusive Western Desert Taipan (Oxyuranus temporalis) featured in Australian Geographic, Issue 144, in 2018.
The expedition took me deep into Western Australia's remote Great Victoria Desert, where I set out to find and photograph one of Australia's least-known venomous snakes. The Western Desert Taipan had only been formally described in 2007, and finding one in its vast, remote habitat was a challenge that made the prospect of an encounter all the more rewarding.
Having the opportunity to document the expedition for Australian Geographic was a significant milestone for me. It was a chance to share the search, the landscape and the experience of pursuing a species that remains elusive even to those who spend countless hours in the field.
The magazine feature captured a snapshot of the expedition, but the story didn't end there. I've since revisited the trip and written a much more comprehensive account, covering the journey, the wildlife we encountered, the challenges of searching such a vast landscape and the encounter that made the expedition so memorable.
